Engine intake question

I have been working on engines for over 25 years. My question is on the intake side of the head the port is square and the intake and carburator is round. Now with my porting experience shouldnt the intake port on the head be round. I am not sure if it is possible on 2stroke motors or if it would mess with port timing. I just was wondering why. It is designed this way. Thanks

I think that being square you can have a larger intake port area than if it was round.
