Broke another diff cup

I was out bashing today & my DR broke another left rear diff cup, it broke inside the diff just like last time. :(

Upon replacing it i was checking the drive line on that side & found that the pin in the dog bone was uneven. ( sticking out more on 1 side ) I'm thinking the vibration might be the cause of the breakage???

I realigned it. fingers crossed.

More bashing will tell.

There seems to be a preference to harden these in the area where yours broke, have you done this?

If so, you may have created a problem. Toughness is far superior to hardness for these items subject to axial stresses.

If not, then it's likely these have work hardened over time if you noticed any plastic deformation, (twisting), in the region of the shadt failure......too much grunt!

I've broke a few in my XB. So far I've been doing better.

I add it to two things I was doing...

One was the rear bouncing too much.

I loosened the rear springs.

The other was the rear hubs.

I was using the upper hole where it attaches to the lower A arm.

I thought "more ground clearance", but...

It put the dog bone at a steep angle when off the ground.

I went to the lower rear end mount / less ground clearance.

The dog bone stays strait and so far no snapping cups.

Hi Count

I just broke my left rear one too (inside the diff same as yours)

Did you find a way to stop em breaking or is it just a weak spot?

Thanks

Another trick that helps it to insert a piece of fuel line inside the cups. This helps to keep the dogbone centered. Ear plugs also do the trick.

Thanks

I'll give it a go when the cups arrive

Hey RC

Whats the difference between the 50031 diff cups for MT & TT and the 54023 for the DR?

I think I've ordered the wrong ones

Thanks

Hi Phill

The MT ones are thicker in the actual cup walls. Compared to the DR ones i bought.

I use MT ones now on my DR & have had no more break.

My MT did break one, yes the left, yes inside the diff same as on the DR. I do a lot of dirt drifting though. might be the reason for it. :p

Also check for bearing freeplay in the diff/axle, my MT is a bit sloppy now, that doesn't help.

Thanks mate

I was doing some (a lot) dirt drifting when it broke so that is probably the answer

I'll put the MT ones in and see what happens

They don't handle real well as front wheel drives!

Thanks Mate

That's the same guy I use but I go to the shop http://www.rcmodel.com.au/

I ordered those ones then when I went to RC Pitstop I found that there's the 2 types.

The ones you've sent the link to are the MT ones and I wasn't sure they'd fit.

The trouble with RC Model is that they show pics but no description

Then again I spose I should check part numbers first

I keep forgetting ebay exists but will take more notice in future.

I know Hobby Warehouse is heaps cheaper from their store that on ebay.

Postage less too.

They both fit. The cups on the MT version are slightly thicker. Probably a better option.

Hi Guys

I have a question ( how unusual you all say)

I have 2 sets of cups in front of me

The 50031's are copper coloured (anodized maybe) and are the same as the ones that came standard.

The other set 54023 are black.

Both appear to be the same except for the colour.

I can only assume that the black ones (54023) are the MT ones.

Is this correct.

Thanks in advance.
