greetings, i own an XT but i feel more eyes see the MT threads so please don't mind the hijack. The question is general anyway. My choke lever on the stock 30.5 carb is closing the choke after a few good speed runs down and back.. Thus closing the choke and killing the engine. I simply removed the plate off of the shaft that goes horizontal through the center of the carb inlet. Does anyone know how to snug up the shaft from closing on its own?

A few other members have had this problem. One solution was to do what you did, and remove the choke plate. The problem is the detent ball goes missing. The detent ball is what holds the choke shaft in position. So, either leave the choke plate off or try to find another detent ball. If it were me, I'd just buy a new carb since the stock carbs aren't very durable.
