I'm with you G-Man. From redcat to mugen to team Durango to traxxas to team associated. Everything I have is discontinued. Sucks. Goes with the hobby I guess.

I wouldn't remove the motor because you can remove the gearing to disengage the motor, so no need to remove it. Check the brakes like Haroldbee said. Also check the trans nuts holding your gears making sure they aren't over tightened. Although possible, I doubt its the clutch on a new rig...

Here's some pics of my DR build. Everything has either been upgraded or customized.

Haven't tried the bahaha springs on redcat shocks. The HPI front shocks fit the rear with no issue but are too long to fit the front on dunerunner. The rear HPI shocks would need to be milled about 2 inches or so shorter to fit the front. I'm gonna do it eventually, just been busy working.

Wheels are HPI and the tires are MadMax Supergrips I think.

25 - 35 gear set will definitely slow it down. Curious if your interested in getting rid of that belt drive if you don't like it? If so I'd be interested in taking it off your hands.
