Default Intro and Dunerunner Review

Greetings all,

Not new to RC but new to 1/5 and gasoline RC. I wanted to purchase a 5bss and build the kit however my domestic chief executive frowned on the expense. I found the Dunerunner and got 4x4 and a much softer price of entry.

The box arrived and I have to admit I was impressed by the size and how stout the components look. Going though the kit I found many loose screws and items that needed to be adjusted. Overall I am impressed by the simple layout and ease of access to all the neccesary components.
Pros:
- Kit is set up to service, from the cutouts to allow the radio box to be opened with no other disassembly to easy access to all of the carb and servo adjustments.
- It just looks great, the easy comparison is to the 5b but since I do not own one it looks great on the workbench.
Cons:
- Screws seem a bit soft, had some trouble with a few that stripped the hex head.
- Use of "e" clips

I am currently breaking in the motor and have it running very rich (and slow).
Over the weekend I will tune the motor and get some speed out of it. The motor starts great and have only had a couple of issues that were just simple maintenance to fix.

Look forward to continuing this and getting some feedback.

Thanks

welcome to the forum I have found the dune runner to be my favorite 5th scale you should have great fun out of it. Adding a good pipe and the 8,000 clutch spring will even increase the speed for you with this beast. Have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I appreciate the warm welcome, thanks to all.

It has been a fun step not only going to gas but stepping up in size, my e-revo is dwarfed.

I do have a few quick questions:
What do you guys reccommend for lube on the gears?
Are there dust covers that work over the dogbones to hold grease?

I also made the mistake of taking it out in damp conditions and filled the entire unit with mud, it took it like a champ but my inner clean freak is in turmoil. How do you guys clean yours?

Thanks

Welcome. I'm anal about keeping my vehicles clean, as well. I usually break my MT down and detail it. This gives me the opportunity to do some preventative maintenance.

Welcome to the Forum. I too am a Dune Runner (V3) owner which is my one and only 1/5th. I clean mine with my water hose sprayer set to "Flat" settings then blow it out with air compressor and then use a home-made "RC Cleaner/Lubricant" mixture that you can learn to make here:

As for lubricating my gears, I use a white lithium grease crayon from my local hardare store and I've vented my gear case by drilling holes in it.

So far I've put the following mods on my Dune and love to hear the guys I run with that have Baja 5b's comment on how fast it is. My only issue with racing and bashing has been with keeping the vibrations down from the motor I run.
  • CPI Tuned Pipe
  • HPI 5b hubs front and back
  • HPI Dirt Buster tires mounted on HPI Star wheel rims (front and back)
  • ESP 27.2 +2mm Stuffed Crank Modified Head Kit from Davesmotors.com
  • Walbro WT-813 Carb
  • HPI Stock Air Filter kit
  • TGN "Gooseneck" two stage foam filter
  • Stretchable Shock "skins" from Davesmotors.com
  • Hi-tec 5645MG Throttle Servo
  • Hitec 5745 Steering Servo
  • Snappy RC Fuel Line Kit
  • Killer Bee Killswitch Kit # 2 with audio alarm (Works with Stoack Redcat 2.4 Ghz Radio)

A picture is worth a 1,000 words, so here you go:

Regards,

Loud72
